Uploading a Web Page Assignment

Setting up your submission

While you are creating your web site, keep in mind that you should have one page that is designated a home page, or "Start Page" in WebCT parlayance. This file should be inside its own folder, and all files you wish to submit with your assignment should be located in the same folder, or in folders within it.

All the files in your site should be given file names that include no punctuation or spaces. Instead of "My friend's cat.htm", you should name your files "MyFriendsCat.htm". Otherwise, you may see errors submitting your assignment.

Also, make sure that any links to files you submit are relative links. For instance, "file:///c:/Documents and Settings/jsmith/Desktop/assignment1/file.html" is an absolute link, since it tells how to find the file using your hard drive as a starting point; "file.html" would be a relative link.

Zipping up

To submit the files, you must store them all in a Zip file. Newer versions of both Windows and Mac OS allow you to easily create this.

In Windows, right-click on the folder containing your assignment files, select Send To, and then Compressed (zipped) folder.

In Mac OS, hold down control while you click on the folder containing your assignment files, and select Create Archive of [folder name].

In both cases, a "Zip" file will be created in the same folder, with the same name, containing all your files.

Uploading your Site

First, log in to WebCT, click on the Assignments tool, and click on your assignment.

Upload your file by clicking Add Attachments.

The WebCT file browser will open up. Shortly, the My Computer icon should load in a tab toward the left of the screen. Click that to select the Zip file from your computer. Be sure you select the Zipped file, not the directory. Once you have selected your .zip file, click Open to upload and attach it to your submission.

Note: If the My Computer icon does not load, or you have trouble uploading your file, you may need to try one of the following:

  • On a Mac: Use Safari. Sadly, newer versions of Firefox do not work.
  • On Windows, there are two common solutions:
    1. Turn on "Classic View":
      1. Right click on the desktop, and select Properties
      2. Click on the "Appearance" tab
      3. From the Windows and Buttons dropdown list, select "Windows Classic style".
      4. Click OK to continue.
    2. Re-install Java:
      1. Go to "Start", then Add or Remove Programs
      2. When the list loads, look for "J2SE Runtime Environment ..."
      3. Uninstall all the entries that start with that name (often with different Update numebrs)
      4. Go to the Java 5 download page
      5. Look for "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 11", and click 'Download'
      6. Click "Accept", then click the "Windows Online Installation" link
      7. Run the file that downloads to install Java.
  • As a last resort, click just the slightest bit below the My Files icon, and you should see a page with a link Click here to select files individually.

Setting your Start Page

Now, you will have to tell which page is your home page, by clicking Set Start Page. WebCT will show you a list of all the files you uploaded. Click next to your introduction page that leads to the rest of your assignment, and click Select.

Preview your Page, and Submit

Click Preview to see your site as your Professor will see it. Go through all the pages of your assignment, and make sure that all your links work, and all your images are present.

If it works for you, it will work for your professor. Click "Submit", and make sure you receive the Confirmation. With that, you are done!
